On this day 23rd September 1999, a monument to Sherlock Holmes was unveiled on Baker Street in London. This was a special day for fans of the great detective, as it marked the 100th anniversary of the first publication of Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The monument is a 9-foot-tall bronze statue of Holmes, complete with his deerstalker hat and pipe. It stands atop a granite plinth inscribed with some of Holmes’ most famous quotes.

Today, the Sherlock Holmes statue is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. Every year, thousands of people come to take photos and pay their respects to the world’s greatest detective.
